PROJECT BACKGROUND:

The USAID/Nepal Karnali Water Security Activity (KAWAS) will create healthy, resilient, and water secure communities at the watershed level through strengthened water and sanitation governance that improves water resource management (including water for more resilient and biodiverse ecosystems), enhances sustainable access to drinking water, improves agriculture water management, and reduces the fecal pathogen burden in the environment from poorly managed non-sewered sanitation through fecal sludge management. The program team will methodically integrate WRM, watershed biodiversity conservation, and water and sanitation service delivery by mapping and strengthening the roles, connections, and capacities of key actors and stakeholders system-wide.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Watershed Biodiversity and Conservation Specialist will be responsible to lead KAWAS’ activities to strengthen conservation of water-related watershed biodiversity (Objective 4). The Watershed Biodiversity and Conservation Specialist will develop/contribute to data-informed reports for designated watersheds, design and implement interventions, and provide technical guidance for staff and stakeholders. The Watershed Biodiversity and Conservation Specialist  will be based in Surkhet with frequent travel throughout KAWAS’s target geographies.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Guide foundational research/assessment activities to identify ecologically significant areas to conserve biodiversity and water, and to inform strategic planning documents including water use master plans (WUMPs) and integrated water resource management (IWRM) plans
  • Initiate/design/advise/oversee activities that support the establishment and maintenance of ecologically significant areas to conserve biodiversity and water.
  • Develop and implement integrated business models, including Payments for Ecosystem Services models. Oversee scaling of successful approaches within and outside KAWAS’ geographic areas.
  • Actively contribute to contractual deliverables, including annual work plans and annual/quarterly reports.
  • Participate in periodic reviews of progress under the Work Plan and adapt plans and activities as appropriate in collaboration with other team members.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with donor agencies, local implementing partners (including grant recipients), and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to good, frequent, and direct communications between the project’s Kathmandu office and the regional office in Surkhet/watershed-based offices.
  • Other duties assigned by WASH Governance Manager, DCOP or COP.

Required Qualification & Experience

Qualification & Experience

  • Degree in relevant field; masters preferred.
  • At least16 years of experience supporting biodiversity conservation and watershed management
  • An energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high ethical standards and appropriate professional image.
  • An extremely well organized and self-directed individual with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and fluency in English

Travel requirements:

  • Travel to target geographies, up to 40% of their time, ensuring close collaboration between the Surkhet office and target geographies.
