Job Description

To spreadhead WFP’s Social and Behaviour Change Communications (SBCC) interventions, with particular emphasis of integrating SBCC components at each stage of the design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluations of the relevant WFP development and humanitarian programmes in Nepal. To provide effective specialized support and technical analyses to policy and programme activities that effectively meet food assistance needs.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the overall guidance of the Head of Nutrition, and direct supervision of the National Nutrition Officer and matrix relationship with heads of other functional units, the job holder will carry out the following tasks;

Design SBCC interventions:

  • Act as a point of contact in the development/design of appropriate SBCC interventions based on need assessment.
  • Support development of SBCC action plans, and ensure their implementation to reinforce the delivery of appropriate messages through multiple channels.
  • Provide technical support in the design/development (or adopt) of manuals and tools as appropriate for relevant WFP activities/programmes.
  • Explore and adopt the multiple channels in reinforcing the key messages like, radio program, TV program, IEC materials disseminations and so on

Technical Assistance and Capacity Strengthening:

  • Support to plan and conduct community sensitization and awareness program on nutrition, health, agriculture for nutrition, WASH, community food bank and school health and nutrition
  • Support to develop the key messages to be reinforced through the project covering the multi-sectoral area, nutrition, health, agriculture for nutrition and WASH etc with consultation with provincial government and team
  • Capacity building of the district nutrition coordinators and the CP for the implementation of the SBCC intervention

Programme Implementation Support:

  • Support in conducting awareness raising campaigns, events, information dissemination, workshop and nutrition training focusing on the SBCC
  • Support to rollout the recipe book training to FCHVs, health workers and relevant government officials
  • Support to develop the HMG session plan for the nutrition messaging and the adoption of the recipe book
  • Support DNC/CP to conduct cooking demonstrations through FCHVs and other community volunteers using locally available recipes (recipe audio/book), indigenous micro-nutrient rich foods/ingredients, and also the house to house nutrition education in their catchment areas.
  • Ensure the integration of the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) in SBCC


  • Support to develop and evaluate feasibility, efficiency and quality of IEC materials. Develop the IEC material in the local language as required
  • Ensure compliance of activities following the donor and UNWFP guidelines and action plans.
  • Document the learnings, progress and case stories in consultation with MRE and communication unit

Required Qualification & Experience


Education: Completion of secondary school education. A post-secondary certificate in the related functional area. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Behavioural Science, Social Science, Public Health or related fields and  relevant on the job training related to SBCC will be a plus.

Language: Fluency in both written and spoken English and Nepali languages. Nepali Typing skill is an asset. Knowledge of local languages is a mandatory.


  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in SBCC around public health and nutrition, community development etc. with governmental or non-governmental organizations
  • Knowledge of and experience of promoting consumption of locally available food, community engagement, development, and inclusion.
  • General knowledge of UN system policies, rules, regulations, and procedures in the area of work is an advantage.
  • Has worked with technical teams (i.e. nutrition etc.).
  • Has contributed to implementation of programmes.
  • Has observed or assisted with policy discussions.


  • Functional competencies including designing and implementing SBCC interventions including the community interaction and awareness raising,
  • Sound understanding of health, nutrition and food security related programmes and initiatives in Nepal
  • Good communication skills, ability for perform well in cross-disciplinary teams, and ability to maintain effective working relations with partners.
  • Training and experience in utilizing computers and standard software packages and systems, such as MS-Office.
