About the project:

Youth for Access to Abortion for Youth (YAAY) is a safe abortion advocacy project funded by Safe Abortion Action Fund. Visible Impact is currently implementing the second phase of the project which aims to:

  • Unleash young people as champions of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights with focus on Safe Abortion.
  • Increase awareness and improve attitudes of health care providers on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights with specific focus on safe abortion in a right based approach.
  • Ensure the sexual and reproductive health services are adolescent and youth-friendly.
  • Mobilize media professionals to challenge the existing stigmas around abortion.
  • Increase support and commitment of the federal level decision makers to decriminalize abortion in Nepal.

Media coverage related to safe abortion is often not factual. Stigmatizing headlines, with inappropriate images and language have led to impression that abortion is a complex, and dangerous medical procedure. Unbiased coverage helps fighting stigmatization and the cause of changing people’s language and opinion towards abortion. Following the recent restructuring of the country, the role of local media for factual coverage is even more important and evidence shows that there exist various gaps and issues that the media houses need to address as well.

YAAY aims to address this gap through media fellowship for media professionals from 7 provinces selected from all over the country for a period of one year.

Overall purpose of the role:

A total of 35 media professionals from seven provinces (5 media professionals each province) will be selected for media fellowship who will be responsible for factual and right based information coverage on issues of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) including safe abortion through digital media. The selected media professional will work in close supervision and coordination with SAAF-YAAY’s program team and will support our advocacy on provision of safe, stigma-free and youth friendly abortion services.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in three days value clarification workshop on safe abortion in Kathmandu valley.
  • Commit and engage in a fellowship for 1 year with continuous coordination and effective communication with the program team.
  • Develop 3 articles, blogs, podcasts or videos in total as relevant covering issues of safe abortion in a factual, informative and progressive way using non-misleading captions, appropriate pictures and words with correct facts and figures during the fellowship period. The deliverables can be in print or digital media.
  • Report the progress and deliverables to Program Officer and M&E Officer of the project via emails.
  • Continue the media advocacy on safe, stigma-free and youth-friendly abortion services even after the completion of fellowship period realizing the impact that can have in the lives of young people.

How to Apply

  • Media professional (writer, blogger, podcaster, TV and radio presenter) belonging to different media houses currently working or are interested to work on sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people.
  • Submission of a) Expression of Interest (EOI) b) CV and c) Sample of at least two pieces of previous work that demonstrates the requirement by 30th November, 2022 to mail.visim@gmail.com
  • Commitment for a period of one year and ability to communicate effectively via emails.

Benefits:

Compensation will be provided on the basis of deliverables and reporting that meets the set criterion for progressive media coverage (NRS. 10,000 per deliverable). Taxes will be applicable as per the Government Regulation and production of at least three deliverables per person will be expected at the end of fellowship period.
