Announcement for Business Promotion Consultant

Position: Business Promotion Officer (ST Consultant)only for Nepalese citizen.

Expected start date: August 2021

Openings: 1 position

Duty station: Surkhet, Karnali Province with frequent visit to the project sites.

Report to: Project Leader

SNV is a not-for-profit international development organisation with long-term, local presence in over 25 of the poorest countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Our team works with local partners to equip communities and businesses with the tools, knowledge and connections they need to increase their incomes and gain access to basic services. SNV works across three sectors: Agriculture, Renewable Energy and WASH.  Under Energy sector, SNV Nepal is implementing “EnDev-III Increasing the access to clean energy through pico-hydro and clean cooking technologies in the remote communities of Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces of Nepal”. This is the EnDev funded project aims to increase access to clean energy through pico-hydro schemes and clean/improved cooking technologies in the remote communities of Karnali & Sudurpaschim provinces. With regards to pico-hydro promotion, this project aims to develop the pico-hydro schemes to provide electricity facility and establishment of small medium enterprises for agro-processing to the remote isolated communities of programme provinces where other means of electrification is not feasible for shorter or medium term.

Objective and Tasks

The Objective of this assignment is to support the communities and potential entrepreneur for the establishment of feasible SMEs at the pico-hydro schemes under development. The project also aims to establish mechanized agro-processing facility and therefore establishment of SMEs like hulling, grinding and oil expelling is part of it. Identification and support in the establishment of electricity-based enterprises development is another task of this assignment. This position needs to work in very close coordination with respective district field consultant and MEAL Coordinator. Specifically, tasks will include but not limited to identification of potential productive uses of energy enterprises or SMEs through market assessment and support for their sustainable operation.

Desired Work and Behaviour Competence:

  • Visit to pico hydro project sites, where the micro-enterprise business is going to be established Do beneficiary mapping to find out potential entrepreneurs (female or people from marginalised groups) and prepare a profile.
  • Facilitate local entrepreneurs for development of business plan and financial projection of enterprise. Develop appropriate and bankable business model. Consider the social and cultural barriers of women entrepreneurs with possible solutions while developing business plan
  • Provide necessary coordination for establishment and smooth operation of possible micro-enterprise business at local level.
  • Support entrepreneurs for obtaining credit financing as per their requirement.
  • Facilitate women entrepreneurs to access subsidized loan and other supports provisioned by the government.
  • Provide necessary support and mentoring for financial management and accounting.
  • Facilitate women in enterprises sessions to improve the collectiveness of women entrepreneurs.
  • Facilitation for developing credible marketing plan, searching potential market and customer segments for marketing of products and services.
  • Facilitation and coordination for establishment of 40 successful business entities (30 electrical 10 mechanical) in pico hydro project area. Keep record of such entities for individual profile of each business entity including name of entrepreneur, type of business, capital investment, loan taken from MFIs/cooperatives, no. of employees, legal status, photographs of flex/hoarding board business and owner from the GESI prospective. Support in the documenting of entrepreneurial journey of the females and peoples from marginalized group. This activity needs to be done with support from MEaL Coordinator.
  • Provide necessary coaching, support, and guidance to the district field consultant regarding establishment and development of micro-enterprise business in PH project implementation site.
  • Regular follow up and monitoring of the business activities supported by programme.
  • This position needs frequent site visits to the fields in Karnali Province.

Required Qualification & Experience

Academic Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration / Rural Development / Development Studies / Social Works or relevant withgra experience of working on enterprise development and promotion activities at community level.
  • Understanding of Micro Enterprise Development (MED) Model will be an advantage

Work Experience:

  • 3 years plus experience of enterprise development activities particularly in the micro/pico hydro or IWM electrification sector.
  • Extensive work experience at community level, understanding local level planning process and working modality
  • Capacity to coordinate with local level stakeholders, private sectors and should have good presentation, reporting and communication skills.
  • Experience of working as Business Promotion Officer for micro/pico hydro projects will be an absolute advantage
  • Experience of working in the Karnali province will be an asset.
  • Good language skills (oral and written) in Nepali and moderate in English
